De Chamaerops staat bekend om de geknakte bladeren en kleine oneffenheden op het blad. Deze palmen groeien aan de kust in Spanje in de wind en knakken hun bladeren uit bescherming. Met dit voorzorgsmaatregel zorgt de palm ervoor dat er niet bij elke windvlaag een gehele steel afbreekt.
